Thearte For Children

Standing Ovations is a walnut creek children's theatre program that is directed by Barrett Lindsay-Steiner. It consists of a three week intensive summer camp and a one semester school year program. It is celebrating its 20th year and was recently named Best of the Bay Area by Bay Area Parent Magazine, 2010. The curriculum combines leadership, acting skills, movement and dance, teamwork, character development and musical comedy training for school age children from elementary school to early high school as well as for teenagers. The teaching by Barrett, along with his staff, inspires self-confidence and builds self-esteem because the environment is friendly and supportive. Many of the staff members who are now professional entertainers were former students in the summer camps.

Once children participate in the camps and shows, they want to return every year. Barrett, an accomplished and award-winning actor and vocalist, writes the plays including the music and lyrics for the crowning performance, which is always very entertaining. In a typical day, the participants experience games, scene-work, song-work and choreography. They have snacks and lunch and participate in electives after lunch such as swimming, voice and speech and more singing and dancing. The closer it gets to performance time, the more scene-work they will do.

The staff consists of Barrett Lindsay-Steiner, a few counselors who direct the shows, junior counselors and counselors in training. They are college and high school students who have worked with Barrett for years during their early acting career. With the positive exposure to the performing arts, students get confidence that stays with them throughout life.

Theatre is something that I've always wanted to get into, alas there aren't any programs that are good here. But if there were any, I'd enroll my kids in a heartbeat! :)

This program sure is very beneficial to kids to both getting themselves entertained or to harness thier talents in acting and music.
